Edison International generates and distributes electric power while investing in a range of energy initiatives, including renewable energy.
We were called upon to create a standards manual for their company that could be used as a tool both for internal use and for any outside vendors that were responsible for designing and implementing marketing materials. In creating this important corporate communication tool, we created an intuitive brochure with a clean design that covered all aspects of their brand—from who they were as a company, affiliate rules and regulations, logo and color usage, branded merchandizing down to all brand applications.
A Legacy of Commitment, Partnership and Inclusion
In addition to a corporate standards manual, we were given the opportunity by the Supplier Diversity division to create their annual report. Southern California Edison (SCE) believes in improving and building upon their long-standing commitment to supplier diversity, so much so that in the last 35 years, they spent $13 billion with diverse firms as part of their Supplier Diversity Program, making it an integral way they do business.
We created an annual report that reflected the spirit of their diversity program. Topics included the programs advancements, events, internal activities, awards and recognitions which were all housed in a clean, colorful report. Personal testimony of businesses both large and small brought home the warmth and commitment SCE shows to their diverse partners.
Lastly, colorful charts, graphs and information graphics were created to communicate their successes.
50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of ”mankind” in 1969.
The Nixon Library, an ongoing and favorite client of ours, brought us in to design the exhibit logo, the commemorative companion booklet, as well as all the advertising and marketing materials. This included street signage, digital billboards, print and online advertising, all the way down to the ceremonial ribbon cut at the grand opening.
Due to its overwhelming success, the exhibit was extended and extra month.
Market Fresh – Intoxicating Views
Shades Restaurant & Bar at The Waterfront Beach Resort goes to extraordinary lengths to follow the culinary code of buying fresh and keeping it simple. The inviting dining room and the suave poolside patio beckon guests to experience intoxicating views of the Pacific, incomparable cuisine, and exceptional wine and spirits.
Before they opened this integral part of the resort (a Hilton Hotel), we were called upon to design their logo and marketing materials to launch their new restaurant.
The unique, exquisite shades
were going to be a part of the
interior design and we were asked
to incorporate them into the logo.
The result was a warm, comfortable, seamless integration. Both the
indoor and outdoor signage had a welcoming effect that only added
to their overall expression. Most importantly, the client was very happy with the results. Shades has become an important asset to the Hilton.

What goes well with BJ’s famous pizza you ask? Well, great beer of course!
At BJ’s, they recognize that brewing is both an art and a science. And in that spirit, they have one simple goal: to brew consistently great beer in a variety of ale and lager styles.
As part of a creative team, we were called upon to create some special promotions for a few of their seasonal beers. Our task was to brand each beer with its own unique logo, and feature the beverage itself as the hero, in an enticing promotional environment that reflected the flavor profile of each beer.

• Lobby stanchion poster
• Bar menu insert
• Back-of-the-house poster

Ever been at a sports event or concert and you suddenly get that urge for a bite to eat or drink? Do you really want to get up, only to wait in line and miss that clutch play or favorite hit song? We didn’t think so.
We were given the task by Apptico Technology Group to brand their
new APP for phones that allows customers to order food and drink from their seats. Customers get notified when their order is ready, saving time, the hassle of lines, so every event is more enjoyable. This complete branding campaign’s challenge was to create something simple, clean, fun and user friendly, even for those who are not technologically savvy.
We helped develop and integrate the Stadiyum brand into the existing brand of the various venues that participated, which all had their own unique parameters. iPhone icons were developed for the venues themselves as well as their individual menu offerings. The market strategy extended not only to the consumer, but to the potential venues as well in an effort to raise and streamline their revenues.

Ladera Ranch is a 4,000 acre master-planned community adjacent to Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and San Juan Capistrano.
It is an active suburban community where their residents enjoy recreational parks, clubhouses, shopping, and trails for joggers, hikers, and bikers.
Before even breaking ground, with no visuals or images of what was to come, we embarked upon a complete branding campaign that was designed to communicate the vision, peak interest and create a buzz about this new, cutting edge community.
It began with a series of newspaper ads and mailers that asked the question “what if?” For example: “What if something brand new had as much character as something that’s been around for a hundred years? that will be your neighborhood.
Each ad installment had a different question and was answered in such a way to give the audience a clear message and ability to envision their dream home and neighborhood in Ladera Ranch.
Following the teaser phase, the campaign “Roots and Wings” was implemented which promoted the idea of Ladera being a place where you could put down solid roots with your family, and also have wings to grow within the various activities and programs available to all residents.
A master brochure gave a general picture and spirit of life there and additional insert brochures gave more specific details about everything from the community intranet to their parks and trails.
Ladera Ranch now has a population of 22,980, proof that the community continues to thrive.
Symantec is one of the world’s largest software companies providing security, storage and systems management solutions to consumers and small businesses to the largest global organizations.
Bond. James Bond.
We received the wink to do some special promotions for some of Symantecs security products. Dubbed the Security Licensing Program, it targeted the sales team to inspire and motivate their sales efforts. Our concept, “License to Profit”, played off a James Bond theme. Copy and visuals were developed with the Bond franchise in mind, complete with a yellow clad Bond figure. The mission proposed to the sales reps: To sell licensing orders of $2,000 or more and earn a chance to win $5,000! “Impressive discounts for your customers, Explosive payoff for you.”
A web micro site, promo postcards, flyers and posters were all developed to promote the program. The sales team were encouraged to act soon or the program would self destruct! The winner and runners up alike received handsome prizes.
The promotion was a huge success, so much so, that our relationship with Symantec grew into more exciting ventures.
An advanced degree of intelligence and security.
Symantec began offering their security products in Multi-User Packs. The sales team could now give schools and universities a fast, easy and cost-effective way to add authorized users or licensed software. From 5 up to 50 installations came with one product, so customers could buy the quantity of licenses they needed and save time and money.
Playing with the university theme, our concept was to show graduation caps to represent the various products, but with the yellow Symantec cap being the hero (the most advanced student of course!). We developed copy to further reinforce the message.
Why They Wore It: The Politics & Pop Culture of First Ladies’ Fashion, was a Nixon Presidential Library and Richard Nixon Foundation collaboration of a museum exhibit and summer speaker and luncheon series that took a closer look into the First Ladies’ wardrobes and accessories.
Carl Sferrazza Anthony, the author, worked with GZD in a much accelerated schedule to pull together the 146 page book that supported the exhibit. Carl is the author of a dozen books on the political and popular culture influence of presidential spouses and families, including individual biographies of Jacqueline Kennedy, Ida McKinley, Nellie Taft and Florence Harding. He served as speechwriter to Nancy Reagan and ghostwriter for an article with Betty Ford, and wrote the introduction to Hillary Clinton’s book An Invitation to the White House.
The collaboration and exhibit was a huge success for the Library.

Mentor is a global market leader in breast aesthetics, responsible for developing some of the finest silicone and saline breast implants, along with other products associated with breast augmentation and breast reconstruction.
In the initial phases of their rebrand, our team stepped in and gave the company a lift (pun intended). Our goal was to help them further develop strong customer relationships, enable them to establish and maintain premium positioning, and to leverage their product portfolio across all distribution channels. In this comprehensive re-brand, characterized by warm photography and simple graphics, we developed literature for doctors and patients alike.
For patients, educational materials about breast implants and breast reconstruction after breast cancer were handled using easy-to-understand illustrations and detailed information.
For doctors, we developed a complete media kit that contained material for their practices including education literature, media templates for personalized advertising, a quarterly newsletter, warranty information and more.
Mentor continues to thrive in the market and has done so since going public in 1970.
CrossFit: Infinite Strength Gym
We were approached with an opportunity to “pump up” the brand of this prominent gym in the Scottsdale Arizona area. The popularity of Crossfit is undeniable today, so we knew the importance of creating a brand that was fresh, contemporary and eye catching.
The logo and color palette was carried out into the interior of the gym, the front desk and into their own CrossFit Infinite Strength gear. The gym has since been voted BEST in Scottsdale.
Rack IT: Sports Apparel
We were also called on to develop the logo for their in-house retail store. The Rack It Fitness Apparel Store is stocked with Reebok CrossFit clothing and shoes in addition to RX Smart Gear, Hard Wodder, Schiek, Wfit nutritional products, Kill Cliff recovery drinks, and their own CrossFit Infinite Strength gear.

WOD POD
Taking fitness training on the road.
Working out can be a drag for many people.
Having to drive to the gym adds that extra barrier that suddenly and effortlessly gives the unmotivated an out. Gas prices, time lost, or the preference to stay home and eat Ding-Dongs— all valid excuses. Or are they?
Not anymore.
Introducing WOD POD. The mobile gym that comes to you, anytime, anyplace.
What is WOD? WOD is "Workout of the Day." The great folks at CrossFit post a workout for each day. The common splits are 3 days on/1 off, and 5 days on, two off. Either way, you work it off.
We were called on to develop a logo, with an edge to it, but yet communicated that working out can be...well....dirty, sweaty fun!
Collateral included:
• Logo development
• Business card design
• Promotional flyers
• Gym banner
• Mobile trailer graphics.
The Old Towne Preservation Association, a public benefit non-profit organization, was established in 1986 to preserve, protect and enhance Old Towne Orange, California. The Old Towne area, encompassing a one square mile area, contains more than 1,400 structures built before 1940.
In the organization’s efforts to increase its audience awareness of its preservation efforts in the community, GZD felt that a complete brand facelift was in order.
As fate would have it, our company sits near the center of this historic district and when we were asked to help with the design of their home tour event materials, we felt honored. From redesigning their logo to OTPA’s website and everything in between, GZD has established and maintained a brand identity that remains consistent throughout all marketing materials produced.
Increased membership in the organization as well as more community involvement in many successful preservation efforts has been a joy to be a part of.
Our successful relationship with
OTPA now spans over a decade.
When Agendia, a cancer diagnosis and drug development company wanted to create a microsite aimed at educating people about breast cancer, GZD was honored to be brought in.
knowyourbreastcancer.com was soon live and kicking. The site educates women to make choices that are right for them, from testing and treatment options, FAQ’s, press releases to the latest news concerning breakthroughs in research. We also carried their brand across print and digital advertising.
In addition to their main website, we designed the Facebook and Twitter page for the Symphony Sisterhood, a network that supports women who have early-stage breast cancer — and those who support and care for them.
Foreshock, Inc., a technology company, provides implementation and application hosting services to businesses. Their clients include the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Brand development included logo and stationery design, print and web advertising, as well as various in-house sales tools and literature.
We know that a product’s packaging can make or break it’s success. Here is what we believe is essential in good packaging design:
1. Clarity and simplicity – Be clear about the product, be clear about the brand.
2. Honesty – Representing the product in the best way possible and that consumers deserve to be treated right.
3. Authenticity – Originality, character and memorability are at the heart of great brands and, of course, great packaging design.
4. Shelf impact – The distinctiveness and appeal of the product when placed on an actual shelf make a huge difference in product sales.
5. Extensibility – Always design product packaging with the future in mind. This means creating a visually systematic design which allows for easy changes of product visual or other information in case further products in the family are added.
6. Practicality – Practicality deals with the actual shape, size and functionality of the product container, not just the label or wrap. If you make the product easier to use, carry or store, the more sales it gets.

This branding project was a collaboration between GZD and our Zhink tank associate, Jeff Barton, who spear-headed the entire project. The result was a contemporary, fresh and effective brand for a local company who is committed to bringing safe cannabis products to the general public.
